Biological, Engineering, and Chemical Undergraduate Research (BECUR)

Date/Time: April 1st from 8am-2pm

In 2008, the University of Arizona Biochemistry club started the Biological, Engineering, and Chemical Undergraduate Research (BECUR) Conference. Now BECUR is being run and held by Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biochemistry club (MCBC). BECUR allows undergraduate students to present their scientific findings at the semi-professional level in a low-stakes environment to practice presenting their research. Moreover, students are judged by graduate students who will provide them with helpful feedback. By participating in BECUR, students may find themselves prepared for national conferences and competitive poster fairs. There will also be a keynote speaker that will talk about research in the Biology field. BECUR 2023 will continue to unite students from various disciplines, provide an environment of shared knowledge, and recognize students for their constant efforts and contributions to their fields.Thank you again!

Talk MOORE Summer Research Opportunity

Hello Wildcats!

We have a summer research opportunity with the Talk MOORE Summer Camp.  If you are interested in cognitive sciences, pre-med, or language, this might be for you.  If you want to see what the profession of speech-language pathology is like as a potential career option, this is a great opportunity to do that.

Since 2010, the Plante Lab has run a 6-week, research camp for preschool children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). This neurogenic disorder causes children struggle to acquire the language and skills that come naturally to others. The research explores ways to improve treatment methods for these children.  We need undergraduates to assist with data collection during treatment periods.  When the children are not in therapy, they spend time in a classroom where students like you help them develop vocabulary, social, and pre-reading skills.

DATES & TIMES:

In summer 2023, camp will run from Monday, June 19th through Friday, July 28th, and we are in session from 8:30 to 12:30 Monday-Friday. Participating UA students are expected to be there from 7:45 to 1:00 (for set up: 7:45-8:00 and debrief meetings: 12:30-1:00). We will have training on two half days the week before camp (June 12-16—days and times TBD). We also ask students to help with camp set up on Sat., June 17th (9:00-12:00) and our parent open house on Sun., June 18th (10:00-12:00). We run the Talk MOORE program at Wings on Words, which is located on Speedway and 6th Ave.

HOW CAN THIS EXPERIENCE BENEFIT YOU?

If you want to register for a summer session and get academic credit for working in camp, you can do that (please discuss registration options with us). You can also participate as a student volunteer, which may support applications for future graduate school or medical school. Either way, you will learn a lot about the DLD population and how to enhance speech, language, and pre-literacy skills in young children. And working in a lab looks great on your resume.  However, we do not have paid positions at this time.

If you are interested in learning more, please contact Becky Vance at rbvance@arizona.edu. Camp positions will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
